NGOs
Phnom Penh
- Friends do great work with street kids. They have 2 training restaurants which are worth visiting - 'Friends - the Restaurant' (Khmer/International with tapas being common) and 'Romdeng' a Khmer restaurant with delicious Khmer food
- Resource Development International (RDI) are an excellent NGO that do alot of fabulous work ranging from water and sanitation to education to small scale agriculture. RDI have been working with Souen and Frances in Souen's village only a few kilometres from Phnom Penh where arsenic levels in the groundwater are extremely high and undrinkable. Along with RDI, we have established a water bank at the school, provided children with drinking water bottles and we will soon install treadle pumps (which use shallow wells that aren't contaminated with naturally occurring arsenic
- Nyemo works with vulnerable woman and children many of who are HIV positive. They provide literacy training, vocational training such as cooking and hospitality, sewing and domestic assistance. They have a restaurant and shop which supports the beneficiaries and which of course is worth visiting. They are only a few blocks from Cambodia Uncovered
- Tabitha is a community development NGO active in various sectors throughout Cambodia. They have a shop close to Cambodia Uncovered which sells many silk items, embroidered cards and jewellery
Siem Reap
- Neary Khmer is a local NGO in Siem Reap that works with the poorest of the poor. The NGO works with malnourished children and pregnant women to try and improve their health, nutrition, water, sanitation and overall living conditions by providing education and training, supplementary food, home gardens, small scale agriculture and water filters. Frances and Souen are board members and involved in day to day activities
Stung Treng
- Stung Treng Women's Development Centre is a local NGO established to help poor women obtain literacy and vocational straining skills. They teach silk weaving which is of excellent quality and is in high demand in UK and Europe. In 2007 they have started to develop further by introducing mulberry plants and silk worms in the hope they will be able to stop purchasing silk from Vietnam and provide employment opportunities for local farmers to grow mulberry trees
